About Us
Westchester Plastics is the nation's leading independent toll compounder of engineering resins, alloys, blends, reactive modifiers and other thermoplastic materials. From a vantage point spanning over five decades in the plastics industry, we've seen and influenced many of the technological developments leading to today's advanced processes and materials.
Westchester Plastics began in Westchester County, New York, in 1948, as a small, privately held resin processor with ambitious growth plans. Over the years, Westchester Plastic's reinvestment in personnel, equipment and technology helped position the company as a leader in processing a wide range of advanced thermoplastic resins, alloys and color concentrates.
In 1968, Westchester Plastic's growth accelerated with the company's acquisition. That event provided an infusion of financial and technological resources to help us realize new market-exploration and facilities-expansion goals.
In 1975, Westchester Plastics headquarters relocated to a new production center and corporate complex in Nesquehoning, Carbon County, Pennsylvania. Since then, our flagship facility has grown to more than double its original size, with a full complement of the latest in processing equipment. Production is backed by complete design engineering laboratories and by expansive indoor warehouse and silo storage for raw materials and finished product.
In 2021, Westchester Plastics was purchased by Niche Polymer, a leader in the plastics industry since 1994. Under the Niche umbrella, Westchester Plastics will remain one of the largest independent toll compounders. Combined, both companies have expanded the services they offer to the market and look forward to continuing to grow their footprint in the plastics industry.
COMPOUNDING
Engineering Expertise
Each year, we compound several hundred million pounds of thermoplastic resins, including elastomers, polystyrenes, polyolefins, polycarbonates and polyesters, nylons, alloys, blends, bio-polymers, and reactive modifiers.
All of them require the highest levels of technical excellence, so every program starts with our Product Development Group. Skilled Westchester Plastics engineers and materials specialists, working together with our customers' R&D staffs, define the objectives and physical properties of the material to be compounded. Once all of the physical properties and performance parameters have been established, we assist in developing a process that produces a high-quality product that meets those needs.
During this evaluation and process development, our experts consider the unique requirements of the resin manufacturer as well as the fabricator that ultimately works with our finished product.
Flexibility is one of the keys to our continuing success a trait that has helped us strengthen our leadership position in the industry. Our production centers are staffed and equipped to provide compounding services for virtually every customer requirement and our full-service process design and production team is ready to carry your idea from conception to final product. Use us to expand and complement your own capabilities.
Capabilities
Westchester Plastics has decades of experience and a complete dedication to compounding. We continually invest in the most up-to-date equipment, keep abreast of the latest industry trends and investigate every new technology. We have a wide range of twin-screw, single-screw, and continuous-mixer equipment, and have recently installed new Coperion twin-screw extruders at our Nesquehoning, PA facility. These additions increase our capacity to handle high-performance engineering resins, and help us meet the increasing demand for reactive compounding.
Knowledge of Resins
Because of the unusually high volume of compounding we do, we regularly work with a wide array of high-performance materials, including:
- Polymer blends reinforced with glass or carbon fibers to enhance strength, rigidity, dimensional stability and impact resistance
- Thermoplastic polymers reinforced with particulate fillers and reactive modifiers for superior strength over base resins
- Elastomers that combine superior mechanical properties with toughness, durability and abrasion resistance
- Lubricated thermoplastic and fluoropolymer composites that incorporate special fillers to reduce friction and improve wear resistance
- Flame-resistant materials compounded from special polymer resins to improve thermal stability at high temperatures and for resistance to impact and warp
- Conductive thermoplastics with special additives for shielding from electromagnetic interference, radio frequency interference, and electrostatic discharge
- Color concentrates manufactured to critical visual tolerances for injection molding, blow molding, and extrusion
As a result, our staff can offer significant expertise regarding material properties and performance characteristics, as well as any manufacturing challenges and techniques for overcoming.
Material Stewardship
In-Process Qualification and Testing
At Westchester Plastics, we start by working with a customer's technical team to produce pilot scale quantities for evaluation and testing, prior to actual full production, but our testing doesn’t end there.
Westchester Plastics conducts ongoing process and material testing from the pre-production stage through final product analysis. Tests are used to determine chemical, environmental, physical, rheological and thermal properties, and to maintain product conformity to customer specifications.
Our testing capabilities and protocols include:
- Flammability testing to UL 94
- Ash content analysis
- Colorimetric analysis
- Moisture analysis
- Infrared spectrometry
- Specific gravity
- Deformation temp. under load (DTUL)
- Melt index testing
- Tensile testing
- Elongation testing
- Impact testing
- Carbon content analysis
At Westchester Plastics, we also maintain laboratory-scale injection molding, blow molding and blown-film equipment to qualify finished product in accordance with prescribed standards of functional performance.
Many specialty thermoplastics, alloys and blends require additives to enhance their properties and performance. Westchester Plastics is geared to support the requirements for the addition of catalysts, modifiers, fillers, reinforcements, process lubricants, compatibilizers, and color concentrates.
Material Stewardship
Because toll compounding is all we do, the fact that the materials we work with belong to our customers is part of the fiber of every Westchester Plastics employee. They have been trained not only to account for and treat the materials you send in with great care but also to strive to generate the highest possible yields. In short, we treat your materials as if they were ours.
In fact, many of our customers have tied us into their materials tracking system or even rely on our system. We deliver completion reports in a timely manner at the end of each run, along with monthly inventory reports and we believe you’ll find that taking care of our customers’ materials is one of the most important factors in our success.
Reactive Compounding
Currently, there are four lines capable of graft and viscosity modification. Our largest reactive line, a Coperion ZSK133mm, is fixed with a Rietz Mill for EPDM grinding.
Moreover, each line is set up with multiple liquid-feed systems that can handle most solids and liquids. We have worked extensively with maleic anhydride, as well as a full range of organic peroxides and silanes, so we can help you design a process unique to your product, including specific screw design and line set-up.
Pre-and Post-Production
Each of our compounding facilities has a full complement of material production equipment that allows us to customize a process to handle all types of resins, alloys, blends, and other materials. These include ribbon and twin-cone blending, Henschel mixing, ratio feeding, master batching, Rietz milling, and pre-drying facilities.
Processing equipment at our Nequehoning, PA, plant.Logistics Capability
The Westchester Plastics facility is designed from the ground up to efficiently ship and receive high volumes of raw materials. In addition, our plant provides indoor warehousing and silo storage for raw materials as well as finished product. The Nesquehoning, PA, plant has 70,000 sq. ft. of warehousing capacity.
Both facilities can receive, store, package and ship materials in both bulk and packaging sets, to include railcar, bulk truck, ocean container, silo, heat-sealed or PE-lined box sets, bags, drums and supersacks. Stretch wrapping and custom labeling can be provided to customer specifications.

Quality Policy
Quality Is Everybody's Responsibility
Quality commitment is an integral part of management philosophy at Westchester Plastics. It starts at the top of our organization and governs every aspect of our operations.
Once a customer has defined specific quality parameters for a product, Westchester SPC procedures are set in motion to ensure the process remains in-control through all production phases. Westchester Plastics process design, quality and production specialists continually monitor SPC data to maintain optimum product purity and to isolate irregularities before they develop into full-blown problems.
Westchester Plastics SPC procedures can also serve as a valuable troubleshooting tool to help alert suppliers to potential quality problems with their process and raw materials. Uniform testing standards, specifications and equipment help us to maintain consistent levels of quality with all formulations regardless of facilities, equipment or personnel involved in the process.
Formal Quality Organization
Westchester Plastics quality programs are key to effective employee communication, education, participation and feedback. All of our engineers, operators and supervisors are attuned to identifying a potential problem, determining and applying appropriate corrective action, and continuously exploring new means of improving quality and service.
At Westchester Plastics, we welcome customer quality audits as a means of helping to maintain the highest standards of quality. Experience has shown that good communications and an effective quality program pay back handsome dividends by improving the cost efficiency of our process as well as the end-product of our customers.
Confidentiality
At Westchester Plastics, your compound is the best kept secret in the industry.
As an independent compounder, our work involves information that is proprietary to our customers. We’ve never taken that responsibility lightly and we take pride in adhering to the letter and the spirit of our secrecy agreements.
Our technical staff has made innovative contributions to some of the most advanced work being done in reactive processing, high performance compounds, alloys and blends. We offer a complete range of state of the art production equipment, including the latest twin-screw extruder technology.
